Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4th Dec to honor and respect the bravery and sacrifices of the Indian Navy personnel which have protected our India’s maritime borders.


Why is Indian Navy Day Celebrated on 04th Dec?

It is because it marks the anniversary of the Indian Navy’s attack on the Karachi harbor during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.


Indian Navy Overview

The Indian Navy is one of the most powerful and technologically advanced naval forces in the world. Indian navy plays a very important role in safeguarding our Indian maritime borders, International maritime rescue & helps, Anti Piracy operations around the world, and providing assistance during natural calamities.

The Indian Navy is a global force in the Asia Pacific region which have a dominant presence in the Indian Ocean region, the bay of Bengal and Arabian sea. It always remains vigilant and on the top for any activities in the Indian Maritime waters and all the nearby international waters.

It is a strong force of about 65K Indian Navy Sailors, Officers and other staffs.


History of Indian Navy

The history of the Indian Navy starts from 17th century when the British East India Company established its naval base in India.

After India gained independence in 1947, the Royal Indian Navy (RNS) was renamed as the Indian Navy (IN). After that, the Indian Navy has grown in power, and strength and become a global naval power at present. It has played a pivotal role in the country’s maritime security and also global war against pirates with its Anti Piracy operations.

The Indian Navy has a wide range of advanced ships, submarines including nuclear submarines, and the best aircraft, and has a highly skilled and powerful workforce. They are constantly modernizing & expanding to remain a global mobile naval force that can challenge any naval force on the planet and they always remain at the forefront of technological advancements in the field of naval capabilities and development.


On Indian Navy Day

On Navy Day, the Indian Navy showcases its capabilities through various events and activities, including fleet reviews, naval drills, and cultural programs. The day is also an occasion to pay respect and homage to the brave Indian navy sailors & officers who lost their lives defending our India’s maritime borders.

The following are the important activities done on Indian Navy Day:-

Flag-raising ceremony:

In all Indian Navy facilities, the day is kicked off with the raising of the Indian national flag and the naval ensign.

Parade and review:

At the naval base, there is a parade that features senior officers giving a review, naval personnel marching past in full uniform, a display of weaponry and equipment, and a parade.

Wreath-laying ceremony:

To honor the courageous troops who gave their lives defending the nation, a wreath-laying ceremony is organized.

Display of naval vessels:

The Indian Navy hosts an open day where visitors can tour ships and submarines and learn about their capabilities.

Family Day at Sea:

Indian naval ships organize a sea tour for the family of sailors and officers.

Cultural programs:

Programs that highlight the great diversity of culture
